NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER |
| | Speak for Yourself (CHOREOGRAPHER: PAUL LIGHTFOOT) Falling Angels (CHOREOGRAPHER: JIŘI KYLIÁN) Sarabande (CHOREOGRAPHER: JIŘI KYLIÁN) Bella Figura (CHOREOGRAPHER: JIŘI KYLIÁN) | | | The internationally renowned dance theatre has three ensembles operating separately. The biggest and oldest companyt (NDT 1) was established in 1959. It has 32 dancers aged between 22 and 40 years and is under the artistic direction of Glenn Edgerton. NDT 2, a group of 14 dancers (aged 17 to 22 years) was set up in 1978 (artistic director: Gerald Tibbs), with the openly declared aim of providing a continuous supply of new dancers for the biggest company. All members accepted already have classical training. The members are selected from among dancers graduating from the world’s top dance schools and conservatoires. At present seventy percent of the dancers in NDT 1 came to the company from NDT 2. Thanks to the system of selection and preliminary training, NDT 1 is “the world’s greatest team of dancers” as aptly remarked by a Montreal theatre critic. NDT 3 was formed in 1991 from the company’s dancers of 40 plus years who wish to continue to use their decades of experience and expertise on the stage with what the international press judges to be unwaning success. The NDT 1 will perform at the Spring Festival 2002. They will be presenting several short choreographies, mainly by Jiři Kylián (1947, Prague). Kylián has been working with the NDT since 1973 and in that time he has staged more than 50 choreographies with the ensemble. Audiences in Budapest can see Falling Angels choreographed to music by Steve Reich ,Sarabande set to music by Bach and Bella Figura with music by Lukas Foss and Italian Baroque composers. The guest performance also features “Speak for yourself” by Paul Ligthfoot. Paul Lightfoot (1966, Kingsley, England) studied at the Royal Ballet School in London. He joined the NDT 2 in 1985. Two years later he was already in the main ensemble. He has been creating choreographies since 1988, at first for NDT 2 and then for both NDT 1 and NDT 3. | | | (With the support of ÁB-Aegon.) |

| | | The acclaimed French Sign Theatre directed by József Nagy of Vojvodina is a successful blend of new circus, theatre and dance resulting in something qualitatively new. Its members perform brilliant acrobatic feats at each performance. It is not by chance that József Nagy has been invited to direct circus productions, demonstrating that the distinction often made in Hungarian intellectual discourse between “high-brow” and “low-brow” art is increasingly becoming little more than verbal acrobatics. | | | (With the support of the French Institute and the AFAA.) |
