DAVID BALAKRISHNAN /violin, EVAN PRICE /violin,
DANNY SEIDENBERG /viola, MARK SUMMER /cello
The Turtle Island String Quartet was founded in 1985 by David Balakrishnan (members: David Balakrishnan / violin, Evan Price / violin, Danny Seidenberg / viola, Mark Summer / cello). The ensemble’s characteristic, individual style is a blend of American popular styles – jazz, blues, bluegrass, rock – and the European music tradition. Their manner of performance is marked by humour and virtuosity. They play Bach and Vivaldi, but also Led Zeppelin and Indian folk music. According to their ars poetica, all their transcriptions are made in the same spirit that must have guided Joseph Haydn when he created the string quartet form. The ensemble’s intellectual leader is David Balakrishnan who also writes compositions and transcriptions for the quartet. Besides quartet playing they often work together with the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Manhattan Transfer.
Danny Seidenberg – who has done numerous transcriptions for the group – is a very versatile performer. He has worked with Steve Reich and Liza Minnelli. He is also a specialist of period instruments and is a member of several early music groups – perhaps it is not by chance that he likes to do transcriptions of works by Bach and Vivaldi. Mark Summer – who is also active as a composer – is a founding member. His phenomenal percussive and plucking technique make him one of the leading jazz cellists of our time.
